Goody's Family Clothing is family business owned by M.D. Goodfriend and his friend. They founded the Athens Outlet Store in the small town of Athens, Tennessee in 1953. In 1979, the family business changed the merchandise focus from offering closeout, irregular, and previous-year merchandise to offering current, first-quality, brand name merchandise as a small family store became numbers of retail clothing stores. This change brought a new headquarters in Knoxville, a new president and CEO, M.D.’s son, Bob Goodfriend, and a name change to Goody’s Family Clothing, which reflected the company’s new strategic direction. Goody's has been ran under Bob until the new owners brought Goody's in January 2006. Duck Head merchandise joined as exclusive that sell in any Goody's stores where people can get glasses, demnis (pants), shirts, shoes, and others. Duck Head was founded in 1865, almost a century before Goody's was born in 1953.
Goody's Family Clothing began sponsoring Children's Miracle Network after CEO Bob Goodfriend nearly lost his son, Jeff, when he fell off the high dive at a swimming pool and fractured his skull. Staff at East Tennessee Children's Hospital saved Jeff's life while comforting and reassuring the family. Goodfriend then resolved to do whatever he could to help the hospital. At the time of the accident, Goody's was not the major force in the retail industry it is today. However, that did not stop Goodfriend from walking into his local telethon during its first year and presenting a check for $10,000. Since 1983, Goody's has faithfully and steadily supported Children's Miracle Network. In 2004, Goody's associates raised over $1.5 million for children's hospitals throughout the Southeastern and Midwestern United States and are well on their way to surpass that mark in 2005. Involvement in the fashion industry began early in the Goodfriend family when Morris Goodfriend opened a clothing store in 1913. Nearly 40 years later his son, Mike, opened his own clothing store, with which his son, Bob, later became associated. In fact, Bob Goodfriend's college nickname is now the namesake of the store. Today Goody's aims at providing fashionable clothes at low prices, and with more than 320 stores, it is clearly succeeding. But that goal is coupled with the goals of hard work and active community support-goals that, for Goody's, benefit children. "Goody's knows that the backbone of our business is our customer, and the best way we can appreciate them is to give back. Where better to start in each community than with the children?” said Kristin Macht, Goody’s public relations manager. “The people in our community really have a heart for kids,” said Susan Hutcheson, manager of Goody’s store #33 in McMinnville, TN. “They are always there to support us no matter what kind of fundraising scheme we come up with, and as a result, the children of the area reap the benefits.” The McMinnville store’s associates have demonstrated time and again that hard work pays off, as they have held a spot as a top fundraiser within the chain for the past several years.
Although Hutcheson’s store raises money for Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in Nashville, TN, Goody’s overall strides in raising money for Children’s Miracle Network impresses her as well. “It’s a team effort, really,” said Hutcheson. “We all work together and do it for the kids. Its’ the least we can do for our customers. After all, they are the reason we’re here.”Store #161 manager Susan Neely in Birmingham, AL takes the CMN cause very seriously. Her granddaughter was treated at Children’s Hospital of Alabama, and Neely placed a poster, showing pictures of her miracle granddaughter at the store for the customers to see. Not only have the store’s fundraising efforts helped the hospital, they have made a lasting impression on their clientele. “It makes them feel good about shopping at a store so committed to helping others,” observed Neely.Goodfriend ensures that time and money are given to his local children hospital just as his company ensures that support is given to Children's Miracle Network hospitals in the communities where their stores do business. Goodfriend's heart for the cause compels the company and its associates to go above and beyond the checks they present each year. In addition to the funds they raise, Goody's sponsors black tie events and offers corporate gifts and matching programs. Ultimately, Goody's good works benefit its customers and the communities where they operate. “The bottom line for Goody’s Family Clothing is that our middle name is ‘family’!
